Outer Banks Art: Expect the Unexpected!
If you’re like me – and the notion of "the unexpected” brings delights (and not trepidation) – then I think you’ll appreciate the local and regional artists whose artwork we showcase at Beach Treasures in Duck.
Once trash – perhaps – now treasure, a number of our Outer Banks artists are creating interesting coastal art and décor from the most unexpected things. For sure, it's an unpredictable way to approach art. Taking something that wasn’t particularly interesting before (like the bottom of a wooden crab bushel basket) and turning it into a colorful focal point and artwork worthy of adorning the walls.
Suddenly, the options seem endless…
At Beach Treasures, I have seen unique art intriguing our shoppers! A beautiful carved shark…made from what? Scrap? And to think that this what inspired our artist from the get go. Some artists might be inspired to make furniture from scrap…but why not a shark?
I hope the unexpected catches you off-guard…makes you want to linger a little longer…and inspires you to preserve your beach experience in a personal way. Just like the perfect pair of earrings completes the outfit, art (big or small) is often the missing piece in that life-sized jigsaw that’s our home or office. Beach glass, buttons, and beads are being transformed into beautiful pieces. Reclaimed from the sea, the bottom of the craft box, or the back of the closet…the tiniest of trinkets make exquisite pendants, whimsical bracelets, fan pulls, ornaments, napkin rings…you name it!
Again…expect the unexpected and Outer Banks art will likely take you there!
In an earlier BLOG I wrote about Rebeccah Rogers, whose work is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Sills turned frames…glass turned canvas. Repurposing from stuff that someone else saw as junk or obsolete. And whether this taps into your “vintage fancy” or you love the new creation, Becky’s windows adorn many walls across the OBX and beyond.
Transforming the usual into the unusual is the sort of “special something” you’ll experience at Beach Treasures in Duck. I’d like to the think that the Outer Banks, with its fragile, exposed existence is part of this magic. Like the transformation of rocks into gems, and gems into jewelry, the creativity and talents displayed in the work of our featured artists is wondrous.
When you’re not on the Outer Banks, we invite you to browse in our newly designed online store and certainly welcome your feedback. Should you find yourself in Duck, just hop on the boardwalk and walk right on in to Beach Treasures in Duck…you’ll never know what you might find!
