A Journey into a New Decade for Outer Banks Gifts
It's so hard to believe that it is a new DECADE (not only a new year)! This has me counting -- literally -- the years since I started my journey at Beach Treasures back in March of 1991. The math says that in March of 2021 I will celebrate the 30th anniversary in this shop! (And yes, there will be a party!)
To look back at the shop where this all started, it is hard to recognize the beginnings of the current iteration of Beach Treasures. We were Beach Essentials back then...filled with beach supplies, toys, 30+ tee shirt designs, novelties, and yes, those "beloved" Hermit Crabs! When I shopped for the store, I purchased anything that was a needed beach supply plus anything that would make me laugh! I am told I have a positive attitude -- and I certainly wanted my customers to come in and have a fun time, here and on the beach.
While I have maintained Beach Essentials as the corporate name, I have spent many years practicing some serious trial and error! I've added this and I've added that...and have cultivated the business by watching, learning, and doing. Each individual who has worked with me in the shop has left his or her mark. What you might not realize is that each one of you walking through our door has also contributed to the new dynamic of our Beach Treasures in Duck.
Some 20 years ago, I found a beautiful larimar pendant while on vacation. I'd never seen the stone before...fell in love with it and purchased it on the spot. It was the best money I've ever spent! My customers saw me wearing this pendant, and over the course of the summer, convinced me that they would buy jewelry from me! So, when I purchased the business I had managed for years, I purchased three used jewelry cases...and the rest (as they say) is history!
Then began the undertaking of complimenting the 16 cases of jewelry that has become the star attraction in the shop. As my father was an artist -- and growing up surrounded by art and artisans -- it seemed somehow-destined that I would invite local artisans to fill our walls and hearts with their work. We began by showcasing local artist, Rebeccah Rogers, who's known for her painted windows. Soon we were joined by Diane Luke with her whimsical pen & ink watercolors…window art from glass artist Kim Richardson...and then “the Queen” of repurposing, Barbara Hearne. With the addition of over 30 local artisans, we have now become an Outer Banks destination for art lovers.
We try to create an atmosphere that suits our unique and ever-expanding gift collection. I have used my own photography and verbiage to create exclusive product lines that we know our customers enjoy. In short, we try to have something for almost everyone...and we don't really miss the Hermit Crabs!
Beyond the beautiful scenery and our location in a premiere vacation destination, being situated along the Town of Duck Boardwalk allows us the opportunity to work with clients from all over....and with OuterBanksGiftsOnline, we bring that fun shopping experience to our customers near and far. We greatly appreciate your feedback on your online experience. We cannot fix a problem, if we do not know it exists. We love the positive comments too...and suggestions for how we can improve!
So, I'm going to spend this New Year -- 2020 -- celebrating our upcoming milestone. Please come in and join us -- we will have mini-celebrations building up to the main event!
