Kim Hobson Richardson: Lets The Sunshine In
After twenty-five years, Kim Hobson Richardson creates from an idyllic artist’s studio overlooking the sound.
Sound nice?
Kim is one of the unique artisans taking up residency here on the Outer Banks. Who can blame her…or them? Imagine waking up each day surrounded by 360 degrees’ worth of inspiration. What a change it was after a full life in Texas, where Kim studied at the University of Houston and developed her craft and interests.
Like many artists, Kim’s journey started from humble beginnings – creating stained glass for only family and friends. It’s not that she was resistant to the idea of working more publically, but as is true for many artisans, the decision to sell her work was one that required a good deal of thought.
Kim has an extraordinary talent for working with stained glass – creating it, even repairing it from time to time. Over the years, Kim broadened her craft to include shell sculpture and window picture art. And while it all still remains anchored in glass – her creations now come from glass that’s been cut or chopped…enhancing something that’s calling to be repurposed or creating something altogether new. Her one-of-a-kind pieces using shells, driftwood, and glass are often related to the ocean and beach life, but she’s been dabbling in flowers too! No doubt I’m just in love with her hydrangeas…that so perfectly match the blooms just outside our doors here at Beach Treasures.
Kim’s window art is ideal for adorning a wall, but also hanging inside a windowpane to catch the sunshine as it pours in. Fond of creating art from stuff she’s found…Kim’s also inclined to use all sorts of scrap to create something new. Her artistic talents have been sought after to create transom windows or inserts for special spots in people’s homes. It’s not hard to imagine the finished projects in my mind…being fortunate to be surrounded by her art while I’m in the shop.
To sparkle and shine…to adorn your surrounds with a bit of color and bring light into your day…who can argue with that? After all, who doesn’t want to let a little bit of sunshine in?
